Has your LIFE ever felt like a ROAD TRIP
I heard a quote this week by CS Lewis. He said, “You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream”
My father was an accounting teacher at the high school in the town I grew up in. He knew numbers, but he was always curious and adventuresome. One of the ways that his adventuresome spirit came out was in being a planner and one of my favorite things he planned was vacations. I remember him getting out maps and studying them before we went on our trips. He talking about our vacation and seeing the maps laid out produced such excitement in him and through him to our family. For me it also produced curiosity. How do you plan a trip. In so many ways it was fun just watching how this all went together. He did an awesome job because we always got to where we were going and it was filled with things to see and experience and remember.
I Wonder...
I wonder now what inspired my Dad? Was it his curiosity? His love of family? Or was it an adventuresome spirit?I believe it was all of these. I don’t remember him talking about goals and dreams growing up, but when we went on the trips I believe he was revealing some of his dreams.
So this got me thinking...
I had to ask the question if I am willing, no matter my age, to grow and to learn?I remember when my husband and I was first married. I knew the basics of cooking, but I was not a very good cook. One day I wanted to make a cheesecake. This is before Pinterest and the internet ( I know it was the stone ages) and I found a boxed form of making a cheesecake. I wanted it look and taste just as it looked on the box. So I took it home and followed the directions. I had high expectations. My hope was that it going to amaze my husband and some how prove that I was a good cook. He was gracious, but it tasted disgusting. I never attempted to make one again until we had been married over 15 years and a good friend taught me how to make one from scratch. It tasted amazing. Now that I know the basics my curiosity of different flavors takes me farther than I would have ever imagined when we were first married.
One thing...
One thing I realize is that my perception growing up was that when my Dad planned things they turned out. It has taken a long time for me to realize that it was just my perception. I don’t think it always turned out perfectly, but he never let us know. He just kept on going and dreaming and planning. I do believe that in our best plan, goals and dreams that they may turn out or they may not, but what are we going to do when they don’t? As I think about my Dad I am inspired. I want to get maps out and plan and dream no matter how old I am.
How about YOU?
How about you, what is something that you wanted to try that you’ve been talking yourself out of?
